Saw my IT manager from work post a link to this blog post about RAID-5 and a hard disks Unrecoverable Read Error rate the other day. The post definitely opened my eyes to the wider considerations when it comes to storage systems. This got me thinking as I've been looking at getting another 2TB disk for the recently upgraded home server. Thankfully the original 2TB disk I bought, the Samsung 2TB Spinpoint F4 EcoGreen seems to have a URE rate (10^15 bits) that's better than I thought it would be. So I think I'll stick to the same model again.
I'll post more about my storage choices when I've finished the setup.
